The flight of a golf ball

چکیده

A skilled golfer hitting a drive can accelerate his club head from zero to 120 miles per hour in the quarter of a second before making contact with the ball. As a result, the ball leaves the tee with a typical speed of 175 miles per hour and at an angle of 11◦ to the ground. From that moment the golfer no longer exercises control. The trajectory of the ball is determined by the laws of physics. In elementary calculus we learn to model the trajectory of an object under the influence of gravity. The horizontal component of its velocity is constant, while it experiences a vertical acceleration down towards earth at 32.2 feet per second per second. This results in a parabolic trajectory which can be described exactly. Over a flat course a ball traveling with the initial speed and launch angle mentioned above would return to earth at a point 256 yards from the tee. In fact, observation of golf ball trajectories reveals that there shape is far from parabolic, as illustrated in Figure 1, and that golfers often drive the ball significantly higher and farther than the simple formulas from calculus predict, even on a windless day. The discrepancy can be attributed to the fact that these formulas assume that gravity is the only force acting on the ball during its flight. They neglect the forces that the atmosphere exerts on the ball passing through it. Surprisingly, this air resistance can help to increase the range of the ball.

Automatic Golf Ball Trajectory Reconstruction and Visualization

The article presents the steps required to reconstruct a 3D trajectory of a golf ball flight, bounces and roll in short game. Two video cameras were used to capture the last parts of the trajectories including the bounces and roll. Each video sequence is processed and the ball is detected and tracked until is stops. Detected positions from both video sequences are then matched and 3D trajectory...

A Neurosurgical Golf Injury

Introduction Being one of the few activities that people of all ages and skill level can play, golf has increased in popularity. Consequently golf-related injuries have been notably increasing over the past few years. This particularly occurs in the paediatric age group.1 Head injury in this sport is most likely to be caused by golf clubs, however there have been reported cases in the literatur...

Effects of special composite stretching on the swing of amateur golf players

[Purpose] The study investigated stretching for safer a golf swing compared to present stretching methods for proper swings in order to examine the effects of stretching exercises on golf swings. [Subjects] The subjects were 20 amateur golf club members who were divided into two groups: an experimental group which performed stretching, and a control group which did not. The subjects had no bone...

Construction of the finite-element models of golf balls and simulations of their collisions

The purpose of this study is to construct a finite-element (FE) model of golf balls with hyperelasticity and viscoelasticity and to devise a method for construction of FE ball models by investigating the relationship between the material properties and the behaviour of the golf ball during and after impact. As for the material model of the FE ball model, the Mooney–Rivlin model and the three-el...

The physics of golf

An overview of the application of physics to the game of golf is given. The golf swing is modelled as a double pendulum. This model and its variations have been used extensively by researchers in determining the effect that various swing parameters have on clubhead speed. These results as well as examples of three-link models are discussed. Kinematic and kinetic measurements taken on the record...
